Have You Found Your Niche in Life?

We all have dreams of what we'd like to be, but how many of us really follow our dreams?  And when we do, are we happy?

We all have a niche - a place or position that is perfect for us.  In order to find that special place, we have to Believe in Ourselves.  Self-esteem is difficult for those of us in the creative fields.  Every day there's someone new who has made it to the top while we remain unknown.  Every day we struggle for our place in our field.

Creativity is a lonely area.  We need our alone time to create and follow through.  Many of us have been taught that we will not succeed.  Few of us can leave our jobs to follow our dream, and fitting our dream work in with family life and work is not easy, often frustrating.  To make it worse, the world is filled with nay-sayers, a great many in our own families.

And if we do publish that one book?  Sell that one painting?  Become the lead dancer in a show?
What then?  That's when the work really begins.  We've made it, now what?  Now, we must keep ourselves going and continue producing our dream works.  Let's face it.  The Humanities field is difficult and competitive, and these days with the economy there are so many wannabe's for the great money they'll be paid (not knowing as we know that only a miniscule group make 'good' money).
And that's the difference, isn't it?  We do what we do because we love it, because it gnaws at us, because it is in our thoughts, our dreams constantly.

You know, it doesn't matter our age - look at Christopher Paolini, who wrote the book Eragon at age 15.  James Michener was 40 years old when he published his first book Tales of the South Pacific.  What stops most of us from succeeding is our belief in ourselves, in our intuition, in our ability to make our dreams come true regardless of those people who try to tell us what's wrong with us.  Besides, we creative artsy people know what's wrong with us - a love for something outside of politics and real-life drama, a world that exists within our own minds, a desire to share our abilities with the world.

I thought perhaps it was time for more quotes to help us along, so here goes:

A great man is he who does not lose his childlike heart.  Mencius

Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once.  Shakespeare

Every calling is great when greatly pursued.  Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.

Think about it.  What are the simple pleasures that have delighted you in the past?  Thomas Kinkade

There are only two choices:  faith or fear.  (from the TV show House)

As long as a man stands in his own way, everything seems to be in his way.  Ralph Waldo Emerson

It doesn't matter what other people say or do.  What matters is how you choose to react and what you choose to believe about yourself.  Louise L. Hay

And from one of my favorite famous people:

"Keep away from those who try to belittle your ambitions.  Small people always do that, but the really great make you believe that you too can become great."  Mark Twain

"It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."  Mark Twain

"When you cannot get a compliment any other way, pay yourself one."  Mark Twain

"It usually takes me more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech."  Mark Twain

and finally:

"Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent."  Eleanor Roosevelt

What a beautiful post! We all need to hear these positive thoughts and remember to believe in ourselves. I love the quotes you chose to include. Reading them was a great way to start my day! I especially like: It doesn't matter what other people say or do. What matters is how you choose to react and what you choose to believe about yourself. Louise L. Hay. I find this to be so true!

Thanks for the inspiration! Happy writing!

Wonderfully inspirational post. And, I agree, the difference is that an artist doesn't do it for the money, they do it to make good art, which is a quote from one of my favorite authors, Neil Gaiman. He said that no matter what you do, make good art, and as soon as it feels like work, stop. Really, what else is there to do! I enjoyed your quotes, they are so true! ~ Jess

What an encouraging post. After reading this I'm gonna kick the front door in and tell all in the house that I am the head and not the tail. I'll tell you later what happens.......if I'm still alive.

Creative people do have a hard time as there is so much competition out there. But reading a post like this gives a lot of inspiration to carry on. Thanks for such a good read.

Rum-Punch Drunk, thank you for your words. You are so right about how tough it is with the competition, but I have a feeling you're on your way to success.

Great post, Donna. We all need a push now and then. It's so easy to give up on what we really want, when with a little work we might just be able to have it.

I loved this post. I feel like my self esteem shattered years ago, along with most of my ego. I will be ok, don't worry! LOL

I also loved your quotes - all good ones! Mark Twain is one of my favorites, too. I grew up not that far from his house, in Connecticut.

Great quotes, Donna. I feel very lucky that I can say I'm following my dreams and loving what I do. Still, that does come at a price. I know I could be making more money if I was still at my previous job, but I didn't love what I did back then. I'll choose my happiness over money any day, so I'm okay with the price I'm paying for my dreams. And hopefully, when my novels come out, I will be making enough to really contribute to my family's income.

This is great Donna! I think about this all the time... how we always put ourselves out there and get so little back for it.
It helps to have encouraging posts like these to keep us all going. :)

Roger, thank you for your comment. It is so easy to want to give up, but then I look at your published works and it makes me think, I can do that too.

Sally, you cute woman, I understand. My relative goes through this too. But you are a model to me, with your knowledge of social networking and your ability to do. Ah, Mark Twain - noone else like him, for sure. Thank you for commenting.

Kelly, you do belong in this field. Your books are so amazing, and you work so hard at being the best. I greatly admire you. Thank you for your comment.

Pk, we do always put ourselves out there, don't we? It is very frustrating at times, but you do such great work with YA. I've felt honored to have you as a close friend. Thank you for your comment.

Fantastic post Donna. Really inspiring. Everyone needs a little inspiration and you are a great cheerleader. Thanks for the great quotes, too. I love the one about giving yourself a compliment.

Kate, thank you for your comments. And we all should remember to compliment ourselves too.

Great post, Donna! This is very true - I can admit freely I don;t make a lot of money at my writing, and even if I made zero I would still do it because I enjoy it. Art for the sake of art :) I don;t know why so many think that writers, artists, entertainers, etc are going to make big bucks. If one looks through history they will see far more starving artists than rich ones - most died penniless and unappreciated but (hopefully) satisfied in their own minds that they had spent their life doing what they wanted.

Donna Yates said...

Joleene, what a great comment! And it is so true. It is for the love of the art that we 'artists' continue with it.

Great post Donna and I love all the sayings. I don't suppose I'll ever be rich and famous but if I make a difference in someone's life--I mean REALLY make a difference, well then I think I've done what I needed to do.
