Do You Believe in Yourself?

How to Charge Your Energy to Achieve Your Goals

Answer these 5 questions:

What do you want out of your life?
Have you achieved that yet?
Why or why not?
What will make you happy?
Do you believe in your own abilities?

Believing in yourself and your own abilities against all odds is crucial to your success and happiness in this life.  Fear is the obstacle that holds us all back.

Believing in myself has been a long and tedious journey, with much tripping along the way.  Overcoming obstacles in my path sometimes takes years and years of chipping away at the fear and lack of self-esteem.

What about you?  Do you feel this way too in your life?

Did you know there's more to life than what we think there is?

Do you know who Joel Osteen is?  Joel Osteen is a pastor, a televangilist, and an author.  How I heard of him is through his books.  Walking through a bookstore one day, I ran across a couple of his works and decided to give them a try, especially his 'Your Best Life Now Journal.'  I am a Spiritualist, so I'm always - always - in pursuit of those works which will help boost me along my way.  And you know, Joel Osteen is one of those people that can help.  Here is one of my favorite stories I read in one of his books:
I heard a story about a little frog that was born at the bottom of this well. It was just a small circular well that you'd see like maybe at a typical little farm. And this frog was just so content. It was just he and his family that lived in that well. And he just played all around the bottom of that well and swam around the water. And he thought, Man, life's never been so good. Me and my family have all the water in the world. But one day as he got a little older, he decided to venture out. He looked up there at the light at the top of that well and he climbed up the side of that well kind of anxiously. And for the first thing he looked up over the edge of that well. And lo and behold, the first thing he saw was a pond. He couldn't believe it. It was thousands of times bigger than what he had.
He ventured out a little further and he came across this huge lake. And he just stood there in disbelief. He ventured out a little further and he eventually came to the ocean where all he could see were miles and miles of water. And he just stood there shocked beyond belief. And he began to realize how limited his thinking had really been. He thought he had all the water in the world but all he really had was a drop in the bucket compared to what God really wanted him to enjoy.

What this story tells us is there is more to life than what we think, but we have to discover it.

If you haven't achieved your full potential yet, you must learn to believe in yourself against all odds.  Even if it takes a lifetime.

A dear friend at Writers Digest gave me this quote one time when I wanted to give up and quit writing:

On the road to their destination
Lie the bleached bones
Of countless millions
Who-when at the brink of decision
Hesitated
And were lost.

I read that and I thought, 'Oh no, not me.  I won't lose.'  What about you?  Will you give up?  Do you hesitate?

Here are some additonal quotes:

Nothing less than the full blossoming of your spiritual potential awaits you.
(The Way of the Wizard by Deepak Chopra)

Are you aware of this?  Shouldn't you be telling yourself this in the mirror every day?

There is never a wrong time to do the right thing.
(Anonymous)

How simple is this saying, and how true is it?  If we understand we have more to life, why don't we just do it and believe?

Whatever you do, do it with all your heart.
(Proverb)

Are you throwing yourself into your projects with all your heart so the outcome will be successful?

God loves to use ordinary people just like you and me, faults and all, to do extraordinary things.
(Your Best Life Now Journal by Joel Osteen)

Wow!  You're kidding me?  Really?  Me?  This is what I thought when I first read this.  Is this your thought too?

What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in a fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.
(Dwight Eisenhower)

Grrr, I say.  I'll take that project on.  I may be a tiny part of this great Universe, but watch me win.  Can you say that too?

One hundred percent of the shots you don't take go in.
(Wayne Gretzke)

Ouch.  How many shots have I missed by not taking that chance.  How many have you missed?

Somebody once said: "the only difference between stumbling blocks and stepping stones is in how you use them."
(One Day at a Time-Al-Anon)

Ouch again.  So that's why I keep getting bruised.  What about you?

Few among men are they who cross over to the further shore.  The others merely run up and down the bank on this side.
(The Dhammapada)

Whew.  I'm out of breath.  Wait.  I'm wasting my energy running and not crossing.  What about you?

Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall.
(Confucius)

This is one of the greatest gifts given to humanity, our ability to rise when fallen.  Now, if we just believed this...

It's not high high you bounce, but how you bounce back.
(Unknown)

Ok then.  I can at least bounce back.  What about you?

Aging puts wrinkles on the body.  Quitting puts wrinkles on the soul.
(Source Unknown)

Oh, I like this one.  I hate wrinkles, and I definitely don't want to wrinkle my precious, beautiful soul.  How about you?

You will never rise above the image you have of yourself in your own mind.
(Your Best Life Now Journal by Joel Osteen)

Oh, darn.  This one takes REAL work.  Does it for you?

In the words of my favorite philosopher:

And of course, the great words from one who did believe in himself:  (oh, yes, you've seen this more than once on my blog.  Let it inspire you as it inspires me)

Here's hoping at the end, we will all have achieved doing it our way.

Thank you Donna - this is a wonderful post. Thank you especially for sharing your frailties as well as your incredible positive spirit. Sometimes I'm wracked with such anxiety about the future I can't sleep at night - I'll try to think of your words when the worries start encroaching! Some really beautiful quotes.

Sharons Sunlit Memories, thank you for commenting. I think we've all been there, anxiety throughout the night.

someone once said to me that eventually we will all finally realise that what we had hoped for will never come to pass and the sooner we accept it, the happier we will be. I absolutely refuse to believe such defeatist garbage. If I want something, eventually I will get it, and even if I don't, it won't be through lack of trying. You're only a loser when you give up trying.

What a wonderful post, Donna. So many great words to live by. I especially like the one from Confucius and the one from Wayne Gretsky is an all time favorite of mine. It is nice to be reminded of these inspiring words. Our path out into the universe is a little easier when we know that we are surrounded by others who are hoping that we succeed. Trying is so important! Thanks for this positive post and I love the videos. :)

Such a great post, Donna. It's not always easy to believe in ourselves, but we really need to make the effort to do it. Thanks for the reminder.

Roger, you are so right. Never give up. Those that say such things DO give up. I love your attitude. Thank you for your comment.

Stephanie, you are one of the sweetest people I've met on life - and very intelligent. Trying is so important. Thank you for your comment.

Kelly, yes, we must believe in ourselves. You, author of several books, would definitely know that. Thank you for your comment.

All wise words Donna but this from Joel Osteen really struck a cord with me –
You will never rise above the image you have of yourself in your own mind.
Such a simple statement and yet with so much meaning.

Donna Yates said...

Barbara, thank you for your comment. Yes, I love that one two. So simple, yet profound, and Joel Osteen is like that.

This is valuable advice, Donna. We all need to hear these words at least once in our lives. Thank you for posting.

Donna Yates said...

Elizabeth, thank you for commenting. I agree. We do need to hear these words.

Loved the Yoda wisdom - I quote this often at people ;)

When I was first looking into publishing and winging back and forth (it was un-cool then to be self pubbed, people made fun of you for it) there were two songs I listened to - one was Kennedy by Kill Hannah and the other was Day Dreamer's Nightmare by Ten Years.

Kennedy could be interpreted as nonsense (my hubby does, LOL!) just a catchy song, but I looked at it more like he was saying IF he was a Kennedy he could have all these great things but since he wasn't he couldn't - classic "boo-hoo, if only I;d been born to the right parents and handed everything, but since I'm not I'll just suffer" but then at the chorus it is like he is sudden;y realizing that it has nothing to do with whether he was born with it all handed to him -

chorus:

'll be brave tonight
Either live or die
I'll be brave tonight
Standing tall and bright
Such romantic eyes
Got me hypnotized
And if I had my chance I'd never let you go

and for the ten years song one line that sums the whole song up is:

The day dreamer's nightmare
is to never even try
your time has slipped by

and so it was listening to those two songs over and over that gave me enough courage to take the plunge ;)

now that I have written a novel length comment I will say good post!

Donna Yates said...

Joleene, thank you for your comment. I've never heard either of these songs. I will listen to them. That's the whole thing, isn't it? Realizing the power is really in our hands, and some things are more of a struggle than others. I do believe you are someone who's done it 'your way.'

Love Joel Osteen and read Becoming a Better You. Great book and I recommend it highly. I agree about the desire to seek out things or you won't even know they are available, however I also think that there's something to be said for being content with the things God has given us. Maybe the frog turned around and told his family that he would rather stay with them in the well then go exploring without them.

The Desert Rocks, you make a good point too. And we should be content with the things God gives us.
